‘Introduction to Hydro-Electric Dams’

BIO – Mike Toma, P.Eng. was born in Syria and holds two bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering—one from the University of Technology, Baghdad, and the other from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg. With over 30 years of experience in civil engineering, Mike has spent the past 17 years specializing in dam safety at Manitoba Hydro. He is currently a board member of the Arab Members Chapter and has actively contributed to the chapter since its establishment seven years ago, serving in various roles, including Chair, Technical Advisor, and Treasurer.
ABSTRACT – Mike will discuss power generation at Manitoba Hydro through hydroelectric generating stations. His presentation will cover the different types of dams, including concrete and earth fill (embankment) dams, along with their components. It will also explore potential failure modes, design and construction considerations, as well as surveillance practices such as inspections and instrumentation.
